Mammoet receives the first Liebherr LTM 1150-5.4E mobile crane with battery-electric drive

  • Practical testing of the LTM 1150-5.4E at Mammoet
  • First Liebherr mobile crane with battery-electric drive
  • Mammoet pursues strategy of sustainability and emission reduction

The international engineered heavy lifting and transport company Mammoet is the first customer to take delivery of the new Liebherr LTM 1150-5.4E mobile crane with battery-electric drive. While prototype testing is in advanced stages at Liebherr in Ehingen, the crane is now officially delivered to Mammoet where it is also being tested in practical use. The new Liebherr crane supports the company's sustainability strategy. Liebherr plans to start series delivery of the LTM 1150-5.4E in spring 2026.

Mammoet received the first LTC 1050-3.1E with electric crane drive back in 2023 and has had positive experiences with it. "Mammoet has a long history of investing in new solutions for engineered heavy lifting and transport. Our purchase of the LTM 1150-5.4E is the next step in this journey, whereby we will help our customers to drive down project emissions while supporting the growth of energy and infrastructure," explains Peter van Oostrom, Global Projects Asset Director at Mammoet. "Compared to the LTC1050-3.1E, the new 150-tonne crane has a battery pack, which gives us significantly more flexibility."

Mammoet analysed the fuel consumption data of cranes of this capacity in its data system and examined what this would mean for the use of this hybrid crane, and the result was very positive. "We examined a random two-week period in the north and south of the Netherlands and estimate that we can operate this crane fully electrically with the battery pack nine days out of ten. This helps us to reduce emissions for Mammoet, but also for our customers," says van Oostrom.

Mammoet's sustainability strategy

Mammoet is consistently pursuing its goal of reducing CO₂ emissions. With innovations such as electric SPMT transporters, electric skidding systems and electrically powered SK ring cranes, the company supports its customers on their way to emission-free construction sites. The expansion of the e-fleet together with Liebherr is another milestone. Mathias Hoogstra, Head of Sustainability at Mammoet, also emphasises: "Our company is driven to ensure that we provide clients with solutions that reduce their emissions on site. This continuing journey is being accelerated with products like this 1150-5.4E. By being at the forefront of the transition to hybrid and fully electric machines, we contribute to a cleaner jobsite whilst supporting our own reduction ambitions."

Mobile crane with "battery pack"

At Bauma 2025, Liebherr presented the LTM 1150-5.4, which has been converted to the new LICCON3 control generation. A particular highlight is the LTM 1150-5.4E variant with electric drive, which allows crane movements to be carried out emission-free and with reduced noise pollution. With an integrated battery, the crane can operate autonomously for up to four hours without a power connection. Furthermore, a low connection power on the construction site is sufficient to develop the full crane performance, as the battery serves as an efficient buffer. The LTM 1150-5.4E is a great step in the changing demands of clients and combines sustainability with maximum efficiency.
