Liebherr high-top cranes drive progress on office development in Amsterdam

  • Three Liebherr EC-H high-top tower cranes support the construction of a new banking headquarter in Amsterdam
  • Two 550 EC-H 20 and one 630 EC-H 40 ensure fast assembly in confined urban conditions and high lifting performance
  • Powerful crane technology enables efficient handling of prefabricated elements and stable workflows on a restricted inner-city site

Three Liebherr EC-H tower cranes support the construction of a new office complex for a leading Dutch financial institution in Amsterdam. Despite limited space and demanding productivity targets, the cranes ensure precise lifting operations and reliable construction.

In the southeast district of Amsterdam, the construction of a major new office complex for a leading Dutch financial institution has been underway since spring 2024, with completion targeted for 2027. The multifunctional development, known as “Linden”, is being developed on Bijlmerdreef and is set to become a future-focused workplace environment that exemplifies modern urban design and sustainability principles.

High-performance crane solutions for inner-city construction

On site, two Liebherr 550 EC-H 20 and one Liebherr 630 EC-H 40 high-top tower crane by Dura Vermeer Materieel BV are in operation. Long term sales partner Van der Spek Vianen B.V. helped to select the cranes for their high load capacities and long reaches, which are essential for working in restricted urban environments.

The EC-H series is designed for demanding high-rise and infrastructure projects. Its modular tower system allows different hook heights to be realised efficiently, while powerful hoist and slewing gear ensure stable and precise load handling, even at great heights. Due to fast and straightforward assembly procedures the cranes could be installed quickly, helping the project to remain on schedule from an early stage.

In a city centre location with limited storage space and narrow access routes, the cranes central positionings are a decisive advantage. The Liebherr EC-H cranes allow large working areas to be covered from fixed locations, reducing the need for frequent repositioning and additional lifting equipment.

Precise handling of prefabricated elements

A core task of the Liebherr cranes on this project is the lifting and placement of large, prefabricated components, including structural elements and facade sections. These components must be positioned with high accuracy to meet architectural, structural, and quality requirements. With their high lifting capacities and smooth control systems, the EC-H cranes enable safe and efficient handling of heavy precast elements. This supports continuous material flow and helps avoid delays caused by rework or imprecise installation.

Complex logistics and sustainable building concept

Designed by Paul de Ruiter Architects and realised by a group of partners, the building comprises approximately 50,700 m² of gross floor space. It includes flexible offices, public park areas designed into the site, restaurants, sports facilities, a parking garage with around 198 spaces, and comprehensive bicycle storage. The building is conceived to meet the highest standards of sustainability and climate adaptation. It integrates thermal energy storage, climate-controlled ceilings, rooftop photovoltaic panels and rainwater retention systems to reduce environmental impact and support long-term performance. The surrounding landscape extends existing public green space and biodiversity, contributing to the project’s overall ecological ambition. The design is also aligned with contemporary workplace trends, offering open, transparent spaces that facilitate collaboration and flexibility, and is intended to accommodate thousands of workers in a future-proof office environment.

One of the main challenges of the project is achieving high production output within a very limited construction area. Neighbouring buildings, restricted access, and strict safety regulations require precise coordination of deliveries, crane operations, and on-site logistics.

In this context, the Liebherr EC-H cranes play a central role in optimising site organisation. By combining high lifting performance, fast assembly, and reliable operation, Liebherr’s high-top tower cranes are making a decisive contribution to the successful realisation of this demanding inner-city project in Amsterdam.
