MK 140-5.1 mobile construction crane proves its worth during antenna replacement work above the rooftops of Mannheim

The Rosengarten Mannheim is one of Germany’s leading conference and event centres. Situated directly opposite Mannheim’s water tower, the historic Art Nouveau building combines modern event technology with listed architecture. A mobile communications system needed to be replaced on the roof of an extension. For this challenging task, SCHOLPP deployed the Liebherr MK 140-5.1E mobile crane.

During the operation, the crane worked luffing job mode. The full counterweight of 13.3 tonnes was utilised. With a reach of 64.2 metres, the mobile communications system was installed precisely and safely. “For this job, I opted for the MK 140-5.1 mobile construction crane. Alternatively, a 350-tonne mobile crane could have been used, but to achieve the required reach, we would have had to fit a luffing jib. This solution would have been considerably more expensive for our client,” explains Florian Schmid, branch manager at SCHOLPP in Mannheim.

High performance with compact dimensions

The MK 140-5.1E is a compact 5-axle crane that achieves performance figures previously reserved for larger crane classes. The crane can be set up in a matter of minutes and is quickly ready for operation. The Vario Jib technology makes it particularly flexible: it allows the crane to be converted from a trolley jib into a luffing jib crane in a short space of time. In luffing jib mode, the MK 140-5.1E achieves a hook height of up to 94.4 metres and a reach of 65 metres with a tip load of 1 tonne.

Advantages for use in city centres

In addition to its cost-effectiveness, the mobile construction crane also impressed with its suitability for use in densely built-up urban areas. The crane was powered electrically during the lifting operation. This meant that events in the Rosengarten and in the surrounding hotels could take place without any disruptive noise.

Liebherr mobile construction cranes are equipped with fully electric drives and winches for crane operation. This enables low-noise and locally emission-free operation. Furthermore, the vertical telescopic tower and various boom angles facilitate work in the immediate vicinity of buildings. The infinitely height-adjustable crane cab ensures an optimal view of the work area and facilitates precise lifting operations even in confined spaces.

SCHOLPP celebrates a double anniversary

For SCHOLPP, the year 2026 marks two anniversaries: the company is celebrating its 70th anniversary and, at the same time, commemorating the 100th birthday of its founder, Alfred Scholpp. Starting with its first mobile crane in 1956, SCHOLPP has developed into a leading provider of heavy-lift services in south-west Germany.
