Hydraulic cylinders that meet future requirements - lighter, smarter, more powerful

CFRP hybrid cylinder for heavy-duty applications: lightweight, smart and sustainable

In a world where heavy-duty machines must perform at peak efficiency while conserving resources and the environment, Liebherr's modular hydraulic cylinders drive sustainable, high-performance applications. Our future-ready cylinders offer the opportunity to open upnew fields of applications and meet increasingly stringent regulations and growing requirements. The sensor technology approachalso contributes to the future of autonomous construction machinery.

With a team of experts and state-of-the-art production facilities, the Liebherr-Components product segment develops hydraulic cylinders at its site in Oberopfingen, Germany.

What makes our hydraulic cylinders unique?

Lightweight

By using carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), we can significantly reduce the weight of our hydraulic cylinders, which increases machine performance and reduces CO2 emissions.

Smart

The integrated sensor technology monitors the condition of hydraulic cylinders in real time, enables predictive maintenance and paves the way for automation and autonomous construction machinery.

Sustainable

Our hydraulic cylinders offer maximum efficiency while reducing environmental impact and are a forward-looking solution for industries that want to achieve both performance and sustainability targets.

Longlasting & robust

The cylinders are characterised by durability, repairability and a sustainable design concept for maximum service life and cost-effectiveness.

Lightweight design

Another focus of Liebherr's innovation lies on lightweight design. By using carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) among other weight-saving design methods, we are able to significantly reduce the weight of our hydraulic cylinders, thereby increasing machine performance and reducing CO2 emissions. This allows, for example, longer booms, more agile movement and an overall improvement in energy efficiency. Our innovative design enables seamless integration with existing equipment.

How much weight can be saved with CFRP hybrid cylinders?

  • Weight savings of up to 50-70% are possible compared to a standard steel cylinder.
  • With a lightweight steel cylinder (high-strength steel) it is still possible to save up to 20% mass for the same performance.

Future-proof piston rod coatings

To further extend cylinder life, Liebherr is working on the development of advanced coatings for piston rods to improve corrosion and wear resistance, while adhering to stringent environmental standards such as REACH, which limits the use of chromium(VI) in the near future.

This proactive approach ensures that customers will be able to meet future requirements for construction equipment in time.

Sensor solutions

Liebherr is also advancing predictive maintenance by integrating pressure and temperature sensors that monitor the condition and performance of hydraulic cylinders in real-time.

The technology helps to detect wear early, to prevent failures, to optimise maintenance schedules and minimise unplanned downtime. This does not only increase machine safety and efficiency but also extends the component life. The sensor approach is fundamental to the future of autonomous construction machines.
