7 projects that show how varied Tower Crane Solutions projects are around the globe

From the basilica in Barcelona to the airport in Santiago de Chile. The Liebherr Tower Crane Solutions (TCS) department has been involved in some of the world’s most demanding construction projects in recent years. Seven examples show how varied these projects can be around the globe. Sometimes a listed building is the focus, sometimes a bridge between two continents or a major airport. What all the projects have in common is that they call for individual crane concepts and close collaboration with customers.

01. Sagrada Família, Barcelona (Spain)

In the final phase of construction work on the Sagrada Família, Liebherr erected a 710 HC-L 32-64 Litronic luffing jib crane to support the completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ. The crane was positioned centrally above the nave of the basilica and operates in a sensitive environment with limited space. It is the first deployment of a luffing jib crane of this kind in Spain.

02. Çanakkale Bridge (Türkiye)

The Çanakkale Bridge connects Europe and Asia and, with a span of 2,023 m, is regarded as the longest suspension bridge in the world. Two Liebherr 357 HC-L luffing jib cranes were used for the work on the 318 m tall bridge pylons. The biggest challenge was the wind in the Dardanelles strait, with speeds of up to 40 km/h, as well as temperature fluctuations of between −5 °C and +20 °C and only around 100 m² of working space on the pylons. TCS supported the project from crane planning through to the later dismantling of the cranes with the help of a derrick crane. This makes the bridge one of the most impressive infrastructure projects in the TCS portfolio.

03. Church organ restoration in Passau Cathedral (Germany)

Not every TCS deployment takes place on a major construction site. For the restoration of the organ in St Stephen’s Cathedral in Passau, the largest Catholic church organ in the world with 17,974 pipes, a Liebherr L1-24 fast-erecting crane was used. Together with the Beutlhauser Group, TCS provided consultancy and planning for this special deployment. The biggest challenge lay not in lifting capacity but in working to the centimetre: the crane had to be brought to site through the narrow lanes of Passau’s old town under police escort. The largest organ pipe weighs more than 300 kg and is over 11 m long, and the church’s marble floor was specially protected with anti-slip mats. The complete restoration of the organ is scheduled to run until 2027.

04. Santiago de Chile Airport (Chile)

For the expansion of Nueva Pudahuel Airport in Santiago de Chile to a capacity of 30 million passengers a year, TCS advised on the selection and planning of 23 tower cranes. The biggest challenge was the very limited crane heights permitted because of active flight operations. One of the flat-top cranes, a 250 EC-B 12 Litronic, was therefore mounted on rails so that it could serve a larger part of the site and be moved out of its slewing position when not in operation.

05. Kruunuvuori Bridge, Helsinki (Finland)

With a 135 m tall pylon, the Kruunuvuori Bridge in Helsinki will be Finland’s longest and tallest bridge, designed for a service life of 200 years. A Liebherr 630 EC-H 40 Litronic with a load capacity of 40 t handled the positioning of formwork sections, the lifting of reinforcement cages and concrete placing equipment, and the handling of components at the various height levels of the pylon. TCS was involved from the early project phases to calculate the suitable tower configuration and the complex tie-in geometry. The biggest challenge was the subarctic winter conditions and the exposed location on the Baltic Sea with no sheltering topography, resulting in correspondingly high static and dynamic wind loads on the crane installation.

06. Fehmarnbelt Tunnel: a horizontal major construction site instead of a vertical high-rise (Denmark)

Unlike conventional high-rise projects, the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel stretches over a length of around 18 km. As the longest immersed tunnel in the world, the project places entirely different demands on crane logistics than a high-rise build. More than 20 Liebherr tower cranes support the production and assembly of the tunnel elements. Many of them are rail-mounted and move flexibly between the individual work areas.

07. Building in the heart of Manhattan: MoMA Tower, New York (USA)

Two Liebherr 710 HC-L 32/64 Litronic cranes were used to build the 320 m tall MoMA Tower. The site was in the middle of Manhattan, one of the most densely built-up urban environments in the world. Planning had to take account of the limited space and the complex logistics of building in a fully functioning city, which is why the first of the two cranes was erected within just 17 hours of delivery.
