As a Heavy Equipment Welder – Field Service at Liebherr Canada, you will perform structural welding repairs on critical crane components such as booms, carbody structures, outriggers, and turntables directly at customer sites, ensuring all work is completed safely and in accordance with engineering specifications and approved repair procedures. You will work independently in the field while collaborating with Engineering and Service teams on complex repairs, supporting breakdown response and scheduled maintenance, and maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and compliance. This role also offers ongoing training, field travel opportunities, and potential advancement through a company-sponsored apprenticeship program toward dual trade certification.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural welding repairs on crane booms, carbody structures, outriggers, turntables, and other critical load-bearing components in accordance with approved repair procedures
- Prepare damaged areas for repair through gouging, grinding, cutting, fit-up, and material preparation activities
- Conduct pre-repair and post-repair inspections to verify repair quality and compliance with engineering requirements
- Read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, repair procedures, welding specifications, and technical bulletins
- Collaborate with Engineering, Technical Support, and Service personnel to develop and execute repair plans for complex structural repairs
- Possess strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform minor disassembly and reassembly of crane components to safely access, prepare, and complete welding repairs.
- Operate cranes, aerial work platforms, forklifts, and other equipment as required to safely complete repairs (where trained and authorized)
- Maintain welding certifications and complete required training programs to support field repair activities
- Follow all company, customer, and regulatory health, safety, and environmental requirements, including site-specific safe work procedures
- Communicate professionally with customers, site supervisors, and project stakeholders regarding repair progress, findings, and recommendations
- Support emergency breakdown response and scheduled maintenance shutdowns as required
- Travel independently to customer sites and effectively manage field service assignments with minimal supervision
- Maintain a valid driver's license and meet all company requirements for operating company vehicles
- Willing and able to work overtime, weekends, and varying schedules as required to support field service assignments, customer shutdowns, and emergency repair work
- Candidates interested in pursuing a dual trade certification as a Heavy Equipment Technician will be supported through a company-sponsored apprenticeship program, providing opportunities to expand their skills and career development within the organization.
Competencies
- At least 5 years of welding experience in the heavy equipment industry.
- Must hold a Red Seal in Welding or in Off-Road Equipment.
- Knowledge of welding procedures, welding and fabricating techniques
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, and repair procedures
- Proper use of hand tools to fit the applications of assembling, repairing, fabricating and welding
- MS Office, service reporting/time entry software
- Follows instructions, guidelines and protocols
- Basic math skills
