Liebherr's 360° surround view system: safety redefined
For over six years, Alexander Bertsch has been working at Liebherr-Components to make working with construction machinery safer and more efficient. Whether sensors or digital cameras - the technology behind these everyday helpers is his passion.
The products developed and manufactured in Lindau on Lake Constance are used both in Liebherr own construction machinery and in the machines of customers outside the Group, such as Prinoth, Sandvik and Bergmann. At Bauma 2025, Liebherr-Components will be presenting LiXplore® Detect ‒ the latest version of a 360° surround view system with person detection. Existing machine fleets such as excavators, mining trucks and wheel loaders can be retrofitted quickly and easily with the system.
Mr. Bertsch, what is special about the 360° surround view system by Liebherr?
Bertsch: As compared to other systems, our solution is consistently digital from image recording to output on the screen. This ensures consistently high image quality without interruptions. This means that even with changing exposure and weather conditions, the image can be quickly adjusted and reliably adapted to the current situation. Another great advantage is the possibility of self-calibration of the system.
Neither the machine nor the calibration mats needs to be laboriously measured, in order to equip the machine with the system for the first time. The system's software algorithm recognises the pattern of the mats and saves the time-consuming measurement of distances. Instead of two hours, the changeover takes about 15 minutes. This makes it possible to retrofit directly in the field.
Which machines can be retrofitted with the system?
Bertsch: Generally, all types of earthmoving machines are well suited, but crawler and wheeled excavators are particularly predestined for this, as visibility is limited by the boom. Retrofitting always makes sense, if the efficiency or occupational safety of the company's own machine fleet is to be increased, i.e. brought up to the latest state of the art. Especially on construction sites, where ensuring occupational safety plays a major role, the timely recognition of people is extremely important. The person detection function of the system is ideal for it.
What innovations does LiXplore® Detect offer as compared to the previous versions?
Bertsch: The optional LiXplore® Detect person detection function adds a powerful security solution to the 360° surround view system. Its outstanding reliability results from the full HD resolution of the new cameras and the high computing power of the new generation of display controllers. This means that the original application evolves from a pure machine and driving area monitoring to an intelligent assistance system for accident prevention. This is a decisive step towards the urgently needed increase in occupational safety on construction sites.
