Best of Industry Award for Liebherr automation solution
In 2023, Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH was awarded the Best of Industry Award in the Robotics category. The company received the award for its solution for the automated disassembly of battery packs from electric vehicles.
After four months of voting and with a total of around 20,000 votes cast, it was clear that the automation solution for disassembling battery packs from Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH had won over the jury of readers of MM Maschinen-Markt. “We are very grateful and proud to win the award, and this also acts as an incentive for us to continue driving forward development in this area,” stated Product Manager Viktor Bayrhof and Jan Pollmann, Head of the Automation Systems Development Department, at the award ceremony in Würzburg on December 7, 2023.
Strategies for overcoming disassembly challenges
Liebherr‘s automation solution has enabled it to overcome various challenges associated with the disassembly of used batteries: old and contaminated components, safely reducing high voltage and a wide range of variants. The pilot system has been in operation at the Open Hybrid LabFactory (OHLF) research campus in Wolfsburg since November 2023. As a member of the OHLF e.V., Liebherr is further developing approaches to ensure scalable and flexible automated disassembly. The results and experience gained are helping to design future battery systems to be suitable for disassembly and recycling from the outset.
