Maximum lifting capacity for a sustainable industrial project: Liebherr cranes in operation at Aurubis in Hamburg

  • Liebherr tower cranes 1188 EC-H, 550 EC-H and 470 EC-B from the Liebherr Tower Crane Center rental fleet support complex lifting operations
  • Züblin AG relies on Liebherr’s high-performance crane technology and trusted partner Feurig Baumaschinen GmbH for sustainable industrial infrastructure

Only high-performance Liebherr tower cranes are being used in the construction of the new MVH (metal processing Hamburg) facility. The combination of large rental cranes from the Liebherr Tower Crane Center (TCC) and an additional Liebherr crane from BMTI’s own fleet enables safe and efficient heavy lifting operations. The project is a key element of Aurubis’s sustainability strategy and places the highest demands on technology and logistics.

For the implementation of this demanding industrial project, the construction of the new Hamburg facility for metal processing scheduled for completion in 2026, construction company Züblin AG is relying exclusively on a fleet of Liebherr cranes supplied by crane dealer Feurig Baumaschinen GmbH.

High lifting capacities for complex industrial processes

The construction site requires the precise lifting and positioning of heavy plant components and steel structures. A Liebherr 1188 EC-H, a 550 EC-H and a 470 EC-B from the Tower Crane Center (TCC) rental fleet are currently in operation, having been sublet to Züblin by BMTI. The fleet is supplemented by an additional Liebherr 250 EC-B from BMTI’s own inventory. The cranes were selected specifically for their high load reserves and reliability in demanding industrial lifting applications.

The EC-B flat-top crane series impresses with its compact, topless design, which enables particularly easy assembly, efficient transport logistics and high flexibility on modern construction sites. Their functional design allow for several cranes to be operated safely even in confined spaces, which is a major advantage in inner-city or densely built environments.

Efficient logistics through integrated Liebherr technology

The close cooperation between BMTI, Feurig Baumaschinen GmbH and the executing construction company Züblin AG, together with the consistent use of Liebherr tower cranes, significantly simplifies site logistics. Standardised control and safety concepts ensure smooth workflows and high efficiency in daily site operations.

In particular, the 1188 EC-H Fibre plays a central role in heavy-duty assembly work thanks to its exceptional lifting capacities. Its fibre rope technology increases lifting capacity by 18%, enabling a maximum load of 40.0 tonnes and a maximum capacity at radius of 9.1 tonnes. In addition, compared with steel rope variants, the fibre crane offers a fourfold increase in service life under equivalent operating conditions. This makes the 1188 EC-H the ideal choice for long-term operations involving heavy loads, perfectly suited to the new recycling facility.

Contribution to the circular economy and sustainable industry

With the new facility, Aurubis will be able to process around 30,000 tonnes of additional recycling material per year from 2026 onwards. The process optimises existing plants, expands metallurgical capabilities within the Aurubis smelter network and shortens processing times. As a result, the project makes a significant contribution to the circular economy and strengthens the competitiveness of the Hamburg site.

The use of high-performance Liebherr crane technology once again underlines the importance of reliable lifting solutions for future-oriented industrial projects with the highest technical and environmental standards.
