Successful Gear Seminars in Tokyo and Osaka
The Gear Seminars held by Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH in Japan have become an important meeting point for the country’s gear manufacturing industry. More than 100 participants attended the events in Tokyo and Osaka in November 2025 to learn about innovations and new technologies, share insights and gather fresh ideas for their own production operations.
Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH has been active on the Japanese market with these seminars since 2016, complementing its presence at the biennial JIMTOF machine tool trade fair – ensuring direct contact with customers even in years without a trade show. Complex productivity-enhancing innovations such as software developments can be communicated much more effectively in a seminar setting than at a trade fair. With a total of 109 participants, the events attracted an exceptional amount of interest – the highest attendance of any Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH Gear Seminars worldwide.
The practical seminar provided an insight into the latest developments in gear manufacturing. The user perspective and the discussion with participants from different specialist areas were particularly enriching.
Two locations, different requirements
The makeup of the participants differed at the two locations: in Tokyo, the attendees were predominantly automotive manufacturers, small-gear producers and contract gear cutters, while in Osaka the focus was more on companies producing large gears. Consequently, each group brought its own priorities to the discussions and exchanges. The participants ranged from machine operators and engineers to company executives, from experienced specialists to young professionals entering the field.
The seminar helped us to learn about new machining methods and to identify suitable machines for our gear sizes. Taking part was therefore extremely rewarding for us.
Liebherr brings innovations directly to users
The seminars focused on specialist presentations covering current gear technologies, processes and software functions. The presentations were deliberately designed to allow time for questions and in-depth discussions, fostering a lively exchange – both with the Liebherr experts and among the participants themselves.
Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH enjoys a strong reputation in Japan for its mechanical engineering expertise. The company’s innovative strength is a key factor in maintaining its profile in this intensely competitive market. Topics that drew particular interest included SkiveFinishing®, the new, cost-efficient process for hard-fine machining of internal gears (more on page 28) as well as the new software function for dresser-independent generating grinding (more on page 24). The seminars once again showed how important it is to bring expertise and innovations directly to the Japanese market.
The presentations provided a comprehensive overview of gear manufacturing technologies and development trends. This enabled me to better understand and contextualize the areas of application and positioning of the various gear technologies.
Practical relevance and exchange as success factors
One of the highlights was the presentation by Yoshinori Kikuchi, president of the JGMA (Japan Gear Manufacturers Association) and CEO of a major OEM supplier. He talked about his experiences with Liebherr technologies from a user’s point of view. Live interpretation between English and Japanese by the local Liebherr team facilitated interaction and underlined the technical expertise of Liebherr’s Japanese team.
The evening buffet provided an opportunity for networking and interaction, which was also reflected in the positive feedback: “Many participants recognized their own day-to-day production scenarios in the applications presented – a key factor in the strong acceptance of the content. The Gear Seminars deliver added value that lasts well beyond the event itself”, concluded Branch Manager Takumi Nagatsuka.
