Associated Terminals has taken an important step towards cleaner and more efficient cargo handling along the Lower Mississippi River with the introduction of two all‑electric CBG 500 E cranes from Liebherr Maritime Cranes. The machines were unveiled during a christening ceremony in New Orleans, marking a shared commitment to modern, sustainable river operations.
The arrival of the cranes represents a significant investment in the future of transshipment on one of the most active waterways in the United States. Designed specifically for high‑volume bulk handling, the CBG 500 E combines strong lifting performance with a fully electric drive system that eliminates local exhaust emissions. Mounted on purpose-built barges, the cranes are engineered to deliver reliable and energy‑efficient operation throughout the region.
With their long-reach lattice booms and robust construction, the cranes are well suited to the demands of river logistics. Advanced energy management systems help reduce overall power consumption, while remote monitoring capabilities support efficient maintenance planning. The operator cabins have been developed with ergonomics and visibility in mind, offering crews a safe and comfortable working environment.
The next‑generation barges on which the cranes are installed further reinforce this focus on efficiency. Hybrid‑ready power systems, intelligent load management and low‑maintenance cooling technology ensure that the vessels meet modern expectations for sustainable fleet operation. Together, the cranes and barges form a forward-looking solution that strengthens Associated Terminals’ service offering along the Mississippi.
The christening event in New Orleans brought together partners and industry stakeholders to celebrate the launch of the new equipment. With both cranes now in service, Associated Terminals is well positioned to support future growth in regional cargo flows, while Liebherr continues to advance innovative lifting solutions that contribute to more efficient and sustainable maritime logistics.
