From newcomer to the star of the construction site
Since Liebherr mobile construction cranes entered the US market in May 2024, the MKs have made a name for themselves in a very short space of time.
Liebherr mobile construction cranes conquer the US market
They have proven themselves on numerous construction sites and left lasting impressions. Phoenix Crane Service from Atlanta (Georgia) also relies on the all-star MK line-up from southern Germany to service their customers. We wanted to know why – and met James Hughett, Sales Lead at Phoenix Crane Service.

James Hughett, Sales Manager at Phoenix Crane Service
With 22 Liebherr cranes, Phoenix Crane Service has a broad and powerful portfolio – from rough terrain cranes to telescopic mobile cranes and crawler cranes. These now include three mobile construction cranes, the use of which has proven to be a real benefit. The positive experience with the MK 88-4.1 and MK 140-5.1 was so convincing that Phoenix ordered two more models of the same type at Bauma 2025.
Phoenix is delighted with the MK concept: “The mobile construction cranes are not only compact, but also incredibly versatile and efficient to operate,” emphasises Hughett. The possible uses for the American crane specialist are broad: from HVAC installation and steel construction to roofing work or new buildings. For Hughett, one thing is certain: “The MKs are game changers – their flexibility is unique.”

Building where space is limited
North America’s metropolises are challenging terrain for construction companies: narrow streets, tall buildings and heavy traffic leave little room for large equipment. This was a decisive reason for Phoenix to invest in Liebherr mobile construction cranes. “We often work on construction sites where space is at a premium,” explains Hughett. “MK cranes can be set up directly at the edge of the building, often without major road closures. And yet they reach heights and ranges like a tower crane – that’s impressive.” The raised driver’s cab also ensures a perfect view of the lift. Hughett is convinced: “When working close to buildings, the MKs are unbeatable.”
When mobile cranes reach their limits
On a construction site, every minute counts. Classic mobile cranes require time for assembly, additional personnel and transport. This is exactly where the mobile construction crane concept comes in. With four models – MK 73-3.1E, MK 88-4.1E, MK 120-5.1E and MK 140-5.1E – the series covers a wide range of load capacities and reach ranges and offers solutions for a wide variety of requirements.
“The assembly of a mobile construction crane is much faster than with a mobile crane. Thanks to the taxi crane concept, we are up and running in no time and can move straight on to the next construction site,” says Hughett. The advantages speak for themselves: only one person is needed for assembly and operation. So there’s no additional transport work and the mobilisation costs are lower. This increases efficiency and significantly reduces overall costs for the customer – a clear competitive advantage for Phoenix.

The Liebherr MK 140-5.1E is in use at Phoenix Crane Service. From the elevated cab, the driver has a clear view of their surroundings and can position loads precisely.
A quiet and emission-free future
When it comes to sustainability too, Liebherr mobile cranes set standards. “The fact that all MK cranes are electrically powered is a valuable option for us. This is becoming increasingly important, especially on sensitive construction sites,” explains Hughett and adds: “With the MK crane, we’re perfectly set up for the future.” The technology behind it is futureoriented too: fully electrified operation enables emission-free and low-noise working – either via construction site power or completely self-sufficiently with the mobile Liduro Power Port as energy storage. The MK crane thus combines sustainability with cost efficiency and flexibility.
For Hughett, one thing is certain: “With the Liebherr mobile construction cranes, we can now realise projects that were not previously possible. This increases our capacity and brings in new orders.” The all-stars from southern Germany have been indispensable for Phoenix and are well on their way to becoming real construction site stars in the USA.
