Modernized pump systems for greater reliability
Together with Jeroen Heesters, Managing Director of Damen Shiprepair and Conversion in the Netherlands, Minister Middelhof formally commissioned dock pump systems supplied by KSB, a German engineering company specializing in pumps and industrial fluid management solutions. These systems serve both the Beatrix Dock (B-Dock) and Antillia Dock (A-Dock) and form the backbone of dry dock operations. The initiative focuses on renewing essential operational systems, improving efficiency, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of ship repair operations. Dry docks rely on high-performance pump systems to rapidly remove water, allowing vessels to enter for inspection, maintenance, and repair. The newly installed equipment replaces aging infrastructure and significantly improves operational reliability, energy efficiency, and turnaround times for visiting ships.
The upgrade significantly improves dock turnaround times and reinforces Curaçao’s ability to service larger and more technically complex vessels as Damen Shiprepair Curaçao operates one of the most important dry dock facilities in the southern Caribbean.
Liebherr selected as preferred bidder for new tower cranes
A second key highlight of the visit was the announcement that Liebherr has been designated as the preferred bidder for the supply of new tower cranes for CDM Holding and Damen Shiprepair Curaçao. The planned cranes are intended to replace aging infrastructure, including crane number 7 at B-Dok, which has been in continuous operation since 1982.
The proposed acquisition of modern, rail-mounted Liebherr tower cranes will substantially increase lifting capacity, operational precision, and safety standards across the shipyard. Their advanced drive systems, robust design, and high reliability are expected to improve material handling processes and support more efficient maintenance and conversion work on large vessels.
Commercial terms for the first crane acquisition have already been agreed upon, and a Letter of Intent,confirming their commitment to this strategic partnership has been signed between Damen Shiprepair Curaçao, CDM Holding, and Liebherr. Final contract documentation is currently being completed.
€20 million (23 million USD) investment program for a future-proof shipyard
Both milestones are part of a comprehensive strategic improvement program launched jointly by CDM Holding and Damen Shiprepair Curaçao in 2023. The program responds to increasing regional demand for high-quality repair and conversion services as global shipping routes continue to shift. With a total investment volume of €20 million (23 million USD), partly supported by a Dutch government grant, the program focuses on renewing critical infrastructure and strengthening operational capabilities.
Key objectives include improving technical facilities, modernizing equipment, enhancing safety standards, and creating sustainable, high-quality employment opportunities. The program positions Curaçao as a leading maritime service and repair platform in the Caribbean region.
With the commissioning of the new pump systems and the selection of Liebherr as preferred supplier for future tower cranes, Curaçao underscores its long-term commitment to investing in modern, reliable, and sustainable shipyard infrastructure. By combining advanced technology, strong partnerships, and targeted public and private investment, Damen Shiprepair Curaçao and CDM Holding are laying the foundation for a resilient and future-oriented ship repair sector.
