Press releases | 15/06/2026
Encouraging the repair of electrical appliances rather than replacing them prematurely, conserving resources, and promoting more sustainable consumption – these are the objectives the European Union is pursuing through the Right to Repair for consumer products. The relevant EU Directive will become national law in member states by 31 July 2026. Liebherr-Hausgeräte is meeting the new regulatory standards with responsible product design that focuses on durability and repairability.
With the Right to Repair, the EU is setting clear momentum for more resource protection and is moving a step closer to the circular economy. It is intended to strengthen the consumer’s position and encourage repairs in certain product categories, including refrigerators and freezers. To this end, the rules governing repairs are being clarified across Europe, for example, through guaranteed repair rights, mandatory spare parts availability, and greater transparency regarding service information.
For Liebherr-Hausgeräte, the Right to Repair signifies the consistent continuation of an established understanding of quality and sustainability. Durability, repairability, and excellent service expertise are integral parts of our corporate identity and product philosophy. The high quality is reflected in appliances that can be reliably used for many years and are developed deliberately for a long useful life. To ensure this durability, all functional parts are designed to last for at least 15 years and must pass extensive quality and load tests before being launched on the market. These tests are designed to withstand typical household use, such as the heavy use of drawers or the frequent opening and closing of doors. High-quality materials and manufacturing standards fulfil this quality standard.
With the Right to Repair, durability of products is gaining an additional meaning: The longer an appliance is used and kept in working condition, the more it makes sense to repair it as an alternative to replacing it. The new repair law is creating another incentive: If customers opt for a repair in the event of a fault during the statutory warranty period, the warranty is extended once for a further 12 months, making repairs not only more sustainable, but also providing greater legal protection. In addition, Liebherr offers a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty for selected energy-efficient domestic refrigerators and freezers in several European countries. This warranty expresses the aim of keeping products in use for as long as possible, whilst also reflecting confidence in their quality and durability.
At Liebherr-Hausgeräte, repairability is an integral part of the development philosophy and is taken into account at an early stage in design decisions. The most recent example is the first circular freezer, which uses the innovative BluRoX technology. The cooling module is located in the base and can be easily removed, allowing for quick repairs and replacements.
When it comes to actually carrying out repairs, an effective service concept and a reliable supply of spare parts are particularly crucial. Liebherr-Hausgeräte already ensures that spare parts are available for up to 15 years after the production of a model ends and goes well beyond European requirements, which, depending on the component, stipulate a period of seven to 10 years.
A global service network with trained technicians ensures that repairs are carried out properly and efficiently. Clear diagnosis and process standards as well as digital tools support systematic fault analysis and targeted repairs on site. Liebherr also offers comprehensible information both to professional service personnel and technically adept customers.
Around 88% of maintenance calls worldwide are successfully completed on the first visit*. This reduces additional journeys, shortens downtime, and limits organisational effort for customers. The high success rate shows that, at Liebherr-Hausgeräte, repairability is not just conceptually rooted but is also effectively implemented in everyday practice and emphasises the link between product design, spare parts availability, and service practice.
*Period under review: May 2025 to May 2026.
