Staying on track with the Liebherr railroad excavator A 924 Rail
With more than 40 years of experience, Omaha Track, Inc., a leading North American rail supply company, relies on Liebherr USA, Co. to provide the right rail machine for their Lexington, KY project. This collaboration allows Omaha Track to uphold its high standards and keep work moving efficiently, supported by dependable equipment and strong backing from Liebherr.

Following the recent addition of a Liebherr A 924 railroad excavator, Omaha Track is using this advanced machine on Class 1 railroad systems to efficiently collect and transport older track. The removed materials are stockpiled and prepared for recycling at a later time. This approach not only supports the ongoing maintenance of rail infrastructure, but also reinforces sustainable practices by ensuring materials are reused and repurposed effectively. The reliability and performance of the Liebherr A 924 Rail are essential to the success of these operations.
“We are incredibly excited to add the Liebherr A 924 Rail to our fleet and look forward to watching its progress and performance on our Lexington project site,” notes Jeff Peterson, President of Omaha Track.

Setting the standard
Founded in 1983 as a growing business repurposing used railroad ties for landscape contractors, Omaha Track has since developed into one of the leading railroad material supply companies in North America. Today, the company delivers a wide range of services and recycled railroad products to Class 1 and short line railroads, rail contractors, and industries across the U.S. With a fleet of approximately 70 pieces of heavy equipment, Omaha Track has incorporated multiple Liebherr machines to support its continued growth, including the A 924 Rail.
Omaha Track’s railroad services operate nationwide on both active and abandoned lines. These services include railroad infrastructure reclamation, abandoned track removal, new construction, track expansion, track maintenance, track inspections, and track repair. The Liebherr A 924 Rail will serve as a key asset in delivering these services efficiently and reliably.
With over 40 years of industry experience, our biggest challenge remains securing sufficient track time. We need a reliable machine and support team. We greatly value the support Liebherr provides, both here in the U.S. and at their factory in Europe.

About the A 924 railroad excavator

Beyond its core rail services, Omaha Track supplies a full range of steel products, including new and reclaimed rail materials. The company also offers equipment sales and rentals, along with terminal services, supported by facilities strategically located throughout the country to ensure broad coverage and accessibility.
“Our partnership with Omaha Track has demonstrated that a Liebherr railroad excavator is capable of far more than standard railroad track maintenance. It can also play a crucial role in removing old rail track and other track materials such as anchors, plates, and spikes, ensuring these components are recycled rather than discarded,” noted Marcus Barnes, senior product manager, Liebherr USA, Co. “The rail gear on our dedicated machine provides stability on the tracks, while its hydraulic performance enables the use of multiple tools, enhancing efficiency and versatility in rail construction projects.”
Innovative construction machines
Liebherr has been developing rail-road excavators since 1967. As an OEM manufacturer, Liebherr leads the global market for these machines, including the A 924 Rail excavator. All Liebherr rail excavators are adapted to country-specific specifications, such as track width, to ensure compliance with local conditions and safety regulations.
Equipped with a powerful engine, the excavator delivers full performance both on the road and on railway tracks. The A 924 Rail is also fitted with in-house hydraulic components that provide maximum precision and efficiency, even under demanding operating conditions. Safety systems play a critical role in rail machines, with features such as slew limits, rear and side cameras, and rollover protection integrated as standard.
Liebherr offers a wide range of small and large excavators for various applications. A comprehensive selection of attachments is also available, including buckets, shovels, vibrators, hammers, and grabs, allowing customized solutions to meet each customer’s specific operating needs.
