Purvis Group boosts biomass production with two Liebherr T 60-9S telescopic handlers
The Purvis Group, a construction services and logistics provider based in Fife (Scotland), has significantly upgraded their biomass production facility through the acquisition of two Liebherr T 60-9S telescopic handlers.
Founded in 1980 by Bob Purvis OBE, the Purvis Group has evolved from its plant hire origins to become a one-stop shop for construction, recycling and transport services in Central Scotland. Their biomass production facility requires reliable high-performance machines capable of processing both virgin timber and recycling material around the clock.
The T 60-9S telescopic handlers were specifically designed for demanding applications such as the waste industry. Equipped with puncture-proof semi-solid tyres, the machines provide excellent grip even on wet and greasy concrete surfaces, eliminating costly downtime due to tyre damage. The heavy-duty axles combined with versatile steering options enable precise manoeuvring even on the tightest sites.
Powered by a compact Deutz 4.1-litre engine delivering 156hp, the machines meet Stage V emissions requirements through an efficient SCR and DPF system. Particularly important when handling wood waste: the exhaust system functions as a spark arrestor, significantly reducing the risk of combustion. The standard reversing fan effectively removes wood fibres from the cooling area, ensuring constant cooling performance in dusty environments.
The Liebherr machines have exceeded our expectations. They have reduced our truck loading times whilst simultaneously lowering fuel consumption to approximately 10 litres per hour.

The job
The hydrostatic transmission provides exceptional pushing power when handling large volumes of woodchip, whilst the four-wheel drive ensures optimal traction on difficult surfaces. The spacious cab offers unparalleled all-round visibility through its panoramic front screen extending into the cab roof, heated side and rear windows, and a comprehensive camera system.
"The visibility is exceptional," reports operator George Nicholson. "The huge windscreen eliminates the need for constant position adjustments to see the bucket. The machine is powerful, smooth and remarkably comfortable to operate."
After successfully completing their first 500-hour service interval, the Liebherr telescopic handlers have proven their worth as reliable key machines.
