Liebherr and Rehlko expand strategic partnership to provide solutions for data centre industry

  • Liebherr and Rehlko strengthen their collaboration to deliver high-efficiency back-up solution for the fast-growing global data centre industry
  • Under the agreement, Liebherr will provide a newly developed combustion engine line, the D99, for larger generating sets

Long-term partners, the Liebherr components product segment and Rehlko, formerly Kohler Energy, aim to mutually provide next generation backup solutions for the rapidly growing data centre industry. Under the expanded agreement, Liebherr-Components will deliver highly efficient combustion engines to accelerate Rehlko’s data centre portfolio to meet increasingly high market demands.

Liebherr-Components, a leading manufacturer of high-performance components in the fields of mechanical, hydraulic and electric drive and control technology, and Rehlko, formerly Kohler Energy, a provider of power and backup solutions, announced the expansion of their strategic partnership on April 27, 2025. The collaboration aims to support the fast-growing global data centre industry with high-efficiency, reliable backup systems.

As the demand for digital services surges worldwide, the data centre industry continues to expand rapidly, driving the need for robust, energy-efficient infrastructure. In response, Liebherr and Rehlko are strengthening their collaboration to deliver integrated backup solutions that combine cutting-edge engine-based backup solutions tailored specifically to the critical requirements of modern data centres.

"This partnership represents our shared commitment to supporting the digital backbone of today’s world," said Andreas Bogner, member of the board of directors in the business unit combustion engines at Liebherr-Components.

Rehlko´s CEO, Brian Melka, added: "We are excited to expand our partnership with Liebherr. Together, we are addressing one of the most pressing challenges in the industry ‒ ensuring uptime and efficiency as data centres scale globally. Our joint solutions will help customers meet performance expectations while reducing energy consumption and operational costs."

Liebherr will contribute large bore engines up to 4,300 kW in addition to the exiting engine portfolio to the expanded partnership. The aim is to meet the increasing demand for larger generating sets in all the present and new hyperscale data centres under the extended agreement. The latter are being built by companies, such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, IBM and Alibaba. These data centres are designed to handle large amounts of data and computing resources, as well as to scale up and down in response to demand.

"With data centres under increasing pressure to deliver tripled dividend in higher power output, performance and sustainability, our combined expertise brings the best of both worlds: advanced turnkey solutions and reliable, highly efficient flexible backup power," concludes Carsten Dommermuth, head of sales for the stationary engine business at Liebherr-Components.
