Bauma 2007: New tunnel excavator
Click: View enlarged picture
In what is a world premiere, Liebherr is presenting a new tunnel excavator at Bauma. The completely redesigned R 944 C Tunnel Litronic replaces the R 934 B Tunnel in a size category in which Liebherr has provided specialist excavators for tunnel building for over 20 years. At around 41 tonnes, the new R 944 C Tunnel Litronic is not only much heavier than its predecessor; with an output of 190 kW / 258 hp, it also offers 31 % more engine power. Nevertheless, the new excavator’s dimensions have been kept remarkably compact to suit its purpose.

The R 944 C Tunnel Litronic is powered by a Liebherr six-cylinder in-line engine which produces an output of 190 kW / 258 hp at a nominal speed of 1,800 rpm. To reduce particulate emissions, the excavator can be fitted with the new Liebherr particulate filter ¬system as an optional extra certified in accordance with the VERT standard (Curtailing Emissions from Real Tunnel-building Machinery). The filter system comprises a closed catalytic-coated filter made from cordierite, a pre-filter and an electronic monitoring unit. The filter regenerates passively via the continual oxidation of the particulate. The system has a modular design, so the central module (comprising filter muffler and silencer) can be easily demounted for ash removal.

For protection, the tunnel cab on the tunnel excavator is equipped with FOPS and FGPS as standard. The windows on the right and to the rear are polycarbonate and therefore characterised by their high impact resistance and very good visual qualities. On request, the entire cab can be fitted with polycarbonate windows. The extremely robust equipment on the R 944 C Tunnel Litronic comprises a slewing arm with 2 x 45 ° slewing areas and a 4.5-m bucket stick. The optional mechanical quick-change system has been fitted with reinforced locking and wear protection at the rear.
