News from the Tower Crane division
Big Fleet of Liebherr Tower-Cranes at stadium project „Allianz-Arena“ in München
Work on the new Allianz Arena in the Munich suburb of Fröttmaning began in the autumn of 2002 and is scheduled for completion in April 2005. This new construction project is being carried out by Alpine Bau Deutschland GmbH in cooperation with the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron.

No fewer than 22 top-slewing cranes from Liebherr’s complete tower crane programme are at work on this project, including eleven of Type 280 EC-H 12, three from Series EC-B with no tower head and others from the EC, EC-H and HC series. The Liebherr tower cranes ensure that loads are moved smoothly and efficiently from place to place, including the more than 107,000 cubic metres of concrete and 20,000 tons of steel called for by the project.

14 free-standing cranes are being used on stadium construction work, with jibs between 40 and 60 metres long to suit the oval ground plan. For construction work on the steeply-angled floors of the stands, the cranes have heights of between 30.6 and 68.8 metres under the hook.

For the adjacent garage parking facility, which will be the largest in Europe, eight Liebherr cranes are in use. Six of these, of Type 280 EC-H 12, have jibs with the exceptional working radius of 75 metres, in order to deliver material to any point on the 550 x 140 m site area. Even at the outer end of these extremely long jibs, the cranes can still lift up to 2,000 kilograms; some of them also feature the added convenience of Litronic control. They are supported by a 280 EC-B 12 Litronic crane without tower head and a 256 HC top-slewing crane. Construction work on the parking garage continues round the clock, with up to 1,450 cubic metres of concrete being poured every day. It in such situations that call for exceptional availability that Liebherr tower cranes demonstrate their immense performance potential.

The buildings cover an area of 37,600 square metres, with a total usable floor area of 171,000 square metres. The stadium, which makes use of an architectural concept that is new to this type of structure, will have 66,000 seats for spectators, arranged in three tiers inclined at 24 degrees at the bottom level, 30 degrees in the centre and 34 degrees at the top. This will guarantee a direct view of events on the playing field below. The infrastructure includes 11,000 car parking spaces, catering facilities occupying approximately 6,500 square metres, three creches for young children, fan shops, offices and conference rooms as well as extensive facilities for the media.
