Flat-Top crane used in renovation of castle near Bologna

A Liebherr 250 EC-B 12 Litronic Flat-Top crane has been in use since August 2007 for renovation and reconstruction work on Rocchetta Mattei castle in the Italian region of Emilia Romagna.

Erecting the 250 EC-B 12 Litronic Flat-Top crane on this exposed site required special arrangements. Because there is a shortage of space around the castle, the crane had to be assembled on foundation anchors instead of on an 8-metre high undercarriage. As deep excavations were not possible on this construction site, and the site lies in an earthquake zone, Liebherr developed special foundation anchors for this operation to guarantee the necessary stability for the crane, and to secure it against collapse.

Thanks to the simplified “connect and work” assembly system which Liebherr provides as standard for all Flat-Top cranes, it was possible to carry out the difficult assembly job on Rocchetta Mattei within the time-frame specified. The “connect and work” system includes quick fasteners for jibs and counter-jibs, the patented LiConnect connection system and also a completely pre-installed compact head.

The 250 EC-B 12 Litronic’s low starting currents, which provide a further advantage in this operation, are particularly important, as consumption in the region concerned may not exceed 30 kW. The Liebherr high-performance drive systems fulfil this criterion, whilst guaranteeing a high handling capacity.
