Liebherr delivered two harbour mobile cranes to Canada
During the past 12 months two brand-new harbour mobile cranes – both of them manufactured by Liebherr-Werk Nenzing, Austria - have been purchased by Canadian stevedoring companies. Whereby an LHM 250 was handed over to Logistec, Montreal in July, A. Harvey & Company Ltd., St. John’s, Newfoundland could celebrate the taking into operation of an LHM 150 in October:

Realizing their ailing fleet of crawler cranes would soon reach the end of their life cycle, Logistec began a thorough investigation of replacement options.  Taken into consideration were crawler cranes, equilibrium cranes, and mobile harbour cranes.  In the final stage of this investigation, the field was narrowed down to two styles of crane; the equilibrium crane and the mobile harbour crane.  Finally, it was the Liebherr mobile harbour crane, type LHM 250 (max. lifting capacity of 64 tons and a max. outreach of 38 m) which was chosen for its high hourly turnover rates and unparalleled quality. The LHM productivity rates were higher than the combined output of two crawler cranes. In addition to this, the LHM was fitted with Liebherr’s proprietary anti-sway system, CYCOPTRONIC® including a unique teach-in arrangement for a fully-automatic operation into an on-site hopper. This feature was implemented to enable the operator’s quick familiarization with the crane therefore enabling them to reach high turnover rates with limited training time.

A. Harvey purchased their LHM 150 – characterised by an overall lifting capacity of 40 tons and a max. outreach of 32 m - to replace their truck crane to efficiently handling special containers on supply vessels for the HIBERNIA off shore platforms where two Liebherr offshore cranes are also in operation. Since Liebherr already has another three offshore cranes positioned in that region (which will very soon be added by further two units), it was no question for Liebherr to commit itself by opening its own service station in St. John's. Besides the technology and flexibility of the LHM in general, such local service set up was a crucial factor to go with Liebherr.
