Prior to the construction of an interchange on the A 38 motorway near Leipzig the soft building ground had to be compacted and drained with vibrated stone columns. Within seven months 42,000 vibrated stone columns between 5 and 25 m in length had to be installed.

In order to successfully install the enormous amount of stone columns in the required period, several piling and drilling rigs, type LRB 255, were used. These are equipped with a 30 m long leader as well as a rope crowd system of up to 45 t pull and push force. This high push force ensures that pipe and vibrator are always brought into a harmonic sine wave and guarantees optimum penetration of the pipes into the soil.
